VSN Installation Basics

Before we begin, we need to start with a quick disclaimer. VSN Visual Guidance requires an RS1 or SC1 in order to operate, which also means either an RS1 or an SC1 must be installed. We are only going to cover the VSN installation in this video. You can expect it to take up to 2 hours to install the VSN components. A full installation of RS1 or SC1 along with VSN will take longer, and that time will vary depending on the machine’s RS1 or SC1 kit. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

Kit Contents

First, let’s go through the main hardware included in the VSN installation kit. Here you’ll find the VSN camera, a debris shield to protect the camera from rocks and mud, a camera mounting bracket, a machine frame mounting bracket, cables for the VSN and the machine’s cab, and separate sets of mounting hardware for the camera and frame mounting brackets. Some of this hardware may vary depending on where exactly the camera will mount to the machine.

Camera Prep

Now it’s time to get the camera ready to make the next part of the installation easy. Here we want to install the debris shield and camera mounting bracket onto the camera first. This will eliminate any headache from having to hold the debris shield and camera steady while also trying to secure them with the bolts. Put the rubber gaskets on first, then position the debris shield and camera bracket, and then finish with the bolts and washers. Tighten everything down and now the camera is ready.

Frame and Camera Installation

Next, you will want to install the frame bracket onto the machine. You should do this according to the installation manual because the positioning will vary between machines. When that is complete, you can then install the camera onto the machine. The brackets should have the camera pointing down at a 45-degree angle once everything is installed.

Cable Routing

As for the cabling, we are not going to get too in depth in the routing and machine specific connections because these can be largely different between machines. Follow the machine installation manual for more details. To cover it generally though, route the main VSN cable between the camera and the bulkhead connection point, which will usually be located somewhere on the outside of the cab. Some installations may have this cable tee into existing RS1 or SC1 cabling connections. Inside the cab, route the cab cable from the back of the field computer to the connection point in the cab. Again, just be sure to follow the connections shown in the installation manual.
